Mana

The film is based on Visayan folklore – the belief that an aswang can not die if he or she is not able to pass on their powers to one of their children. This power usually takes the form of a bone or a tooth. If they are not able to pass it on, they become like the living-dead – alive but constantly wasting away. Furthermore, it is said that an aswang will only die from a wound in their back since their tongue can not reach it and thus they are unable to heal it.
It is a familiar process in the life of a Filipino family: the death of a matriarch or a patriarch, the loss of the leader of the clan . A time when they are forced to face long-delayed decisions, confrontations and debts.
In the facing of it, in the unraveling of that which is buried, in the fighting off of the “siege”, in the coming-together of all their collective fears – there lies the story of MANA.
